Commercial lawyer

We have a rare opportunity for an experienced commercial lawyer to join our firm.

Our commercial law service is currently provided by lawyers from our litigation team (for terms & conditions, construction contracts and some other contract drafting) and our commercial property team (for business sales and all property-related matters).  We are looking for someone who will be able to create a combined practice area.

We are based in the beautiful region of North Norfolk (Fakenham and Holt).  We expect an extremely high level of service from all our staff (prompt response times, thorough and clear legal advice, commercial and practical explanations, etc), and aim to provide the same quality of advice and work that you might expect from a national or city firm.  Many of our clients have been with the firm for decades, and we need to be able to continue to maintain those very long lasting business relationships.  However, we also believe in work-life balance: we rarely ask for work beyond 5pm or weekends, and the targets for our lawyers are comparatively modest; see here (https://www.butcherandrews.co.uk/lawyers-why-work-for-us/) for other great reasons to work at Butcher Andrews.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently, requiring very minimal supervision.  They should be able to deal with the following:

Business sales / purchases

Company restructuring

Terms & conditions

Commercial contracts

Intellectual property

General commercial advice

The role is ideal for someone who is at least 5 years PQE, given the minimal level of supervision that will be provided, though other levels of PQE will be considered if they can show appropriate ability.  The candidate should be ambitious; this role has a clear and potentially swift pathway to equity partnership for the right person.  Our commercial clients are loyal to the firm, but there is a significant market of potential business to be targeted by the right person in North Norfolk and its surroundings.  Ideally we would like to appoint someone who could eventually build their own team, similar to the existing teams at the firm.

The ideal candidate would be able to show the following attributes:

  1. Excellent specialist legal knowledge in a wide range of commercial matters (company law, intellectual property, commercial contracts, etc)
  2. Ability to work independently and pro-actively
  3. Committed to complete compliance with SRA rules, best practice and the firm’s own procedures, including good file management, time recording, meeting/attendance notes, etc
  4. A team player, able to liaise with other departments and inspire confidence
  5. Ideas for marketing, and a willingness to implement them.  A following of clients or referrers would be desirable, but not essential.

We would consider an applicant who has a more specialist background in commercial law (e.g. a corporate lawyer or an intellectual property lawyer).  Training can be provided to that person, but they must be able to demonstrate an ability to learn quickly and to be able to work in areas of practice that are new to them accurately.

Although we will consider some home-working, this job is likely to require the candidate to work from our Fakenham and Holt offices for at least the majority of the working week. This role would therefore suit someone who already lives in North Norfolk or intends to move to the area, though we have lawyers who commute in from places such as Norwich, Dereham and King’s Lynn.

We would consider flexible working for this role (part-time, etc).

This role is being advertised alongside a similar invitation for an employment lawyer.  We would consider candidates who can cover both practice areas.  We would also consider candidates who currently work in a mix of commercial and commercial property.

This is a rare opportunity, and we are looking for an exceptional candidate to fulfil it.

Employment lawyer

We have a rare opportunity for an experienced employment lawyer to join our firm.

Our employment law service is currently provided by lawyers from our litigation team (for contentious work) and our commercial team (for non-contentious work).  We are looking for someone who will be able to create a combined practice area, which has existed in the past at Butcher Andrews.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently, requiring very minimal supervision.  They should be able to deal with the following:

Employment tribunal disputes (for employees and employers)

Settlement agreements

Drafting employment contracts and staff handbooks

TUPE advice

Restrictive covenants (drafting and enforcing)
