A Place to Build a Career, and a Life
Butcher Andrews is based in Fakenham and Holt, just minutes from the North Norfolk coastline. Many of our team live locally and value the balance that comes from working in a respected, professional firm while being close to coast and countryside.
Our Fakenham office occupies the former Post Office building, and our Holt office was purpose-built for the firm in the early 20th century. We value character and continuity, and we have no intention of moving to anonymous open-plan space. Most of our lawyers work in their own offices, and support and management staff work in small shared rooms. It creates a quieter, more focused environment while still allowing collaboration.
We are committed to remaining rooted in North Norfolk for the long term.

Whether you join us as a solicitor, trainee, legal executive, secretary, receptionist or member of the management team, you will be part of a close-knit and professional group.
We are selective in who we recruit, and that shows in the strength of the team. Our lawyers bring experience from regional and city firms as well as from training within Butcher Andrews itself. Our support and management staff are experienced, capable and integral to the firm’s success.
People describe the firm as friendly and supportive. Colleagues help one another, share knowledge and work collaboratively, particularly when deadlines approach. Several members of staff have recommended friends or family to join the firm over the years, which speaks to the culture we have built.
The Partners operate an open-door policy and are approachable and receptive to feedback from all levels of the firm.
Our reputation means the work is substantial and varied.
Across the firm we act on:
For lawyers and trainees, this means exposure to high-quality, meaningful work. For support and management staff, it means playing a key role in delivering a professional, reassuring experience to clients who place significant trust in us.
Clients regularly comment on the welcoming atmosphere in our offices, something that depends on every member of the team.
We invest in our people.
For lawyers and trainees, this includes structured supervision, funded continuing professional development and support for specialist accreditations. Progression to Associate, Senior Associate and Partnership is available for those who demonstrate ability and commitment.
For support staff, legal executives and managers, we encourage career development and upskilling where desired, including CILEX qualifications and broader responsibilities in areas such as marketing, administration and credit control.
We prefer to develop talent from within whenever possible.
We operate a generous discretionary bonus scheme for fee earners, built around achievable targets. We do not expect routine evening or weekend working. Our aim is for people to do high-quality work during their contracted hours and then switch off.
That same principle applies across the firm. We encourage all staff to work their agreed hours and maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal life.
Holiday entitlement starts at 25 days (pro rata for part-time staff), rising with seniority, plus bank holidays. We close over Christmas and New Year and encourage everyone to take their full leave entitlement. We trust our teams to support one another when colleagues are away.
Salaries are competitive locally and reflect the quality of work undertaken. Benefits include pension provision, death-in-service cover, a fair sickness policy, referral incentives, staff discounts, social events and a North Norfolk parking pass (not restricted to business use).
We are proud that 78% of our lawyers are female and that 60% of our equity partners are female. Progression is based on merit, professionalism and contribution.
We are an established firm with over 130 years of history, but we remain forward-looking in our approach to development, client service and career opportunity.
